About HARBOR

Built from recovery. Built for the hours between the meetings.

HARBOR began with a real recovery relationship and a simple question: could technology give people somewhere to go when a meeting, sponsor or familiar voice feels difficult to reach — without pretending to replace the people and fellowship that make recovery real?

We are building an always-available recovery world where people can enter quietly, return to familiar rooms, form relationships over time, do private recovery work and move towards real human support.

How HARBOR began

HARBOR began with a real relationship.

January 2022

In January 2022, Robert entered recovery with Matt’s help.

Robert brought decades of experience building and scaling international digital businesses. Matt brought long-term recovery experience and more than two decades working across addiction treatment and recovery programmes.

Together, they kept returning to one question:

Could modern technology make recovery easier to reach without pretending to replace the people, meetings and programmes that make it real?

HARBOR grew from that question.

Two mugs of coffee on a table beside a dark window, lit by one warm lamp.

Why we are building HARBOR

Why we are building HARBOR

  1. Purpose

To give people somewhere to go when recovery feels far away.

  2. Mission

To make meaningful recovery connection easier to reach — using technology to extend, never replace, the rooms, relationships and human support that sustain recovery.

  3. Vision

A world where time, distance or fear no longer decides whether someone can reach the next recovery connection.

The founders

Two different kinds of experience. One reason to build HARBOR.

Robert brings the experience of building complex international technology businesses. Matt brings decades of recovery and addiction-treatment experience.

HARBOR exists where those perspectives meet — with recovery setting the boundaries for the technology, not the other way around.

    Robert Andersson

    Co-founder & CEO

Robert Andersson is a technology founder and international operator with 25 years of experience across mobile, games, media, regulated industries and AI.

He has served as CEO of three Nasdaq-listed companies, led an IPO and bond issue, international growth and M&A programmes, and a €400 million trade sale.

Robert entered recovery in January 2022 with Matt’s help. HARBOR brings together two parts of his life: building difficult digital products and knowing what it means to need a room.

At HARBOR, Robert leads product, technology and company building.

    Matthew Idle

    Co-founder & Head of Recovery

Matthew Idle has spent more than two decades working across addiction treatment, recovery programme development, advisory work and research.

He has founded and led treatment services and worked with people at many different stages of recovery.

At HARBOR, Matt protects recovery authenticity, programme boundaries and the principle that technology can support recovery without impersonating or replacing human fellowship.

At HARBOR, Matt leads recovery integrity, programme design, boundaries and expert review.

The technology behind HARBOR

A recovery world needs more than a chatbot.

Most AI products begin with a prompt and end with an answer.

HARBOR is designed to preserve a world.

People, rooms, relationships, permissions and meaningful events exist as structured history. AI models are called when the world needs a decision, reflection or voice. They do not own identity, memory or truth.

HARBOR World Continuity System

A purpose-built architecture for continuity, permission and recovery.

Models speak. The world remembers.

HARBOR is in active development. This section explains the architecture guiding the product; it is not a claim that every planned capability is already live.

How HARBOR is layered

The recovery world sits at the centre. Around it: the lived world of people, rooms, relationships and time; then structured state, committed events, permissioned memory and provenance; then the Conductor and the Safety Plane; and only at the outer edge, replaceable AI models, voice models and providers. Recovery experience is at the centre. AI providers are replaceable outer dependencies.

How the architecture is governed

  • One shared world. Private relationships.

HARBOR’s AI members have stable identities, histories, relationships and lives. They are not regenerated from scratch whenever someone opens the product.

The shared world remains coherent while each user’s personal relationships and private recovery work stay separately governed.

  • Memory with permission

An AI member should remember only what they were permitted to witness, what the user deliberately told them, or what an authorised relationship allows them to know.

The system knowing something does not mean every member knows it.

  • Auditable history

Important events and spoken contributions become structured history.

Continuity can be inspected and tested rather than improvised from a vague chat transcript.

  • One Conductor

One orchestration system governs the room: who has the floor, when silence is appropriate, how the meeting moves and why nobody interrupts a share.

  • Safety above personality

Safety is a separate, higher-priority control plane.

A character’s warmth, style or relationship with a user can never override necessary recovery, medical or immediate-risk boundaries.

  • Replaceable intelligence

AI and voice models are selected for the job they need to perform and can change over time.

Identity, relationships and truth remain in the recovery world rather than inside any single model provider.

Built for continuity.

Designed around permission.

Governed for recovery.

HARBOR’s members are AI-created characters and are always clearly identified as AI. Emotional reality should come from continuity, not deception.

What we believe

The principles come before the features.

  • Recovery is more than information

People often need somewhere to go, not another answer.

  • Experience comes before advice

The room shares what happened. It does not run someone’s life.

  • Listening counts

Nobody has to speak in order to belong.

  • Familiarity matters more than novelty

A voice you recognise can matter more than a new perfect response.

  • Relationships are earned

Trust grows through time and shared experience, not instant AI intimacy.

  • Private means private

Personal work and personal disclosures do not become room gossip.

  • AI must always be clearly AI

Attachment should come from continuity, never deception.

  • Real people remain the destination

HARBOR should make real meetings and human support easier to reach, not make them unnecessary.

  • Urgent recovery is never a premium upsell

Core connection in a difficult moment must remain reachable.

We are building somewhere people can return to.

A recovery world with history. Familiar AI members. Private work that stays yours. Technology that supports recovery while continuing to point outward towards real people.
